What is a RT-PCR COVID Test?
Why Do I Need A RT-PCR Test?

The new molecular Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) COVID test is the medical industry’s most accurate COVID test on the market. It is a diagnostic test that detects genetic material from the virus. You may be required to get an RT-PCR test by your employer, if you plan to travel internationally, or if you are unvaccinated and traveling domestically.

“Even if an Antigen test is negative, we are recommending an RT-PCR test to confirm those results.”

Dr. MuraliMD, Owner of Las Cruces Urgent Care

Everything you need to know about COVID-19 testing

It’s been a long year, with a lot of information to digest. Let us help you clear things up. Here’s what you need to know about the different COVID-19 tests available at Las Cruces Urgent Care.

When to Take a COVID Test?

The CDC recommends that unvaccinated people should test within 3-5 days of being exposed to someone with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19.

What Type of COVID Test to Take?

Rapid Antigen tests are great, but they can have false negatives. If you need to travel or need to end your quarantine before 14 days, we recommend a RT-PCR test.

Covered by Insurance?

Our listed prices above are self-pay options. You can get them covered by your insurance, but appointments and other conditions apply. Keep reading to find out more.

RT-PCR Testing FAQs

Important Information About Molecular (RT-PCR) COVID-19 Tests

General Information About RT-PCR Testing

The new molecular Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) Covid Test is the medical industry’s most accurate COVID test on the market. It is a diagnostic test that detects genetic material from the virus.

Is a RT-PCR Test an Antigen Test?

No, RT-PCR tests are not antigen tests, but molecular tests. Molecular tests are considered to be more accurate than antigen tests.

How Long to Get My Results?

We offer same-hour results for our RT-PCR tests. The actual testing is about 15-20 minutes per test, but the time for a patient to receive their results may vary from 1-4 hours. To ensure you get prompt results, we suggest getting tested two hours before our clinic closes.

Will My Insurance Cover a RT-PCR Test?

Not all insurances cover RT-PCR tests. It depends on the insurance company and your selected insurance plan. Appointments must be scheduled, and the physician must have cause to prescribe an RT-PCR covid test (i.e. you are symptomatic, or are unvaccinated and recently exposed). Appointments do not guarantee a provider will order the RT-PCR Test. For this reason, we are highly encouraging patients to walk in and pay out of pocket.

Rapid Antigen Testing

Important Information About Rapid Antigen COVID-19 Tests

General Information About Rapid Antigen Testing

A rapid antigen test detects proteins from the virus which causes COVID-19. It is considered to be most accurate when performed on individuals who are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19.

How Accurate Is A Rapid Antigen Test?

Rapid antigen tests are most accurate when performed on individuals showing COVID symptoms. False negatives can occur if a rapid antigen test is taken without showing symptoms. For this reason, we may encourage you to take an RT-PCR test after a negative antigen test to confirm the results.

How Long to Get My Results?

We offer same-day results for our rapid antigen tests. The time for a patient to receive their results may vary from 30 minutes to 4 hours. To ensure you get prompt results, we suggest getting tested two hours before our clinic closes.
